Guwahati: The Assamese biographical feature Shaheed Kamala Miri: The Unsurrendered Soul premiered on August 15, 2026. The film charts the life of Mising freedom fighter Kamala Miri. Bhawani Doley Tahu directed and scripted the project while Manoranjan Doley produced it through MRD Films Production House and Orchid Medical and Educational Trust. It serves to keep his history alive.
Born Kamal Chandra Laing in 1894, Miri hailed from Opor Temera village. He started his political rise during the 1920s. Alongside comrades Baloran Laing, Bepung Pathori, and Korddik Morang, he took on British rule. He worked with nationalist leaders Rajendra Barua and Sankar Barua to rally rural Mising villages. He pushed the movement deep into indigenous pockets.
Miri prioritized the cause over his home life. He left his wife, Kaniki Laing, to manage the family while he traveled to organize meetings about land rights, floods, and Congress membership. He also fought local addiction. He and his associates targeted widespread opium and cannabis use in the area between Opor Temera and Gelabil. The film captures this multifaceted activism.
Bhawani Doley Tahu took on the demanding roles of director and writer while raising a child. The project aims to give his contributions the attention they deserve. The film notes that for leaders like Miri, the struggle for freedom was not just about colonial resistance. It was also an effort to build stronger communities. The production provides a fresh look at the grassroots roots of India's independence.
Releasing the work on the 80th Independence Day was no accident. The filmmakers intended for the date to offer symbolic weight. "The project is significant for its portrayal of Kamala Miri as a freedom fighter and a committed follower of Gandhian ideals, community mobilisation and social reform," the production team noted. His story remains a vital link to the history of rural Assam.
