Guwahati: Jorhat officials slapped a night curfew on the Assam-Nagaland border to block extremist infiltration. District Magistrate Jay Shivani issued the order, grounding all human and vehicle traffic within a five-kilometre strip of the border. The ban runs daily from 8 pm to 5 am.

Intelligence reports flagged potential movement by extremist groups looking to breach the state line. Authorities worry about the peace of the district. Officials specifically pointed to recent ULFA-I recruitment, warning that new volunteers could use the border as a transit route to launch attacks. The order claims that "unrestricted movement in the border belt, particularly during night hours, could pose a threat to security and lead to law-and-order issues."

The administration implemented these rules under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Soldiers, police, magistrates, and forest workers keep their freedom of movement. Everyone else stays put. The local government expects the crackdown to choke off crime and stop anti-national activity, citing successful past restrictions. Anyone caught breaking the curfew will face prosecution under Section 223 of the BNS.
