Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma opened the Northeast's first visa application center in Guwahati on Thursday, October 15. The facility helps locals avoid long trips to submit paperwork. VFS Global runs the office, which handles applications for 14 different countries. It makes international travel easier.
The center accepts visa applications for Austria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Estonia, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Malta, Morocco, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Travelers heading out for business, study, or tourism can use these services. Officials say the hub boosts Guwahati as a major regional player.
Tourism Minister Ajanta Neog and Transport Minister Charan Boro joined the ceremony. Yusmi Talwar, VFS Global's CEO for South Asia, attended the event alongside diplomats from Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Italy, and France. These nations hope the office brings better access to residents across the Northeast.
VFS Global only manages the logistics. The company clarified, "The centre will facilitate the visa application process, while decisions on granting or rejecting visas will remain with the respective countries and their authorised authorities." Applicants can find specific documentation rules and appointment windows through authorized VFS Global channels.
