GST Officers Launch Compliance Inspections Across Kohima

Kohima: GST officials in Kohima launched an intensive two-day inspection drive on June 17 and 18 to boost tax compliance and business transparency. Led by the assistant commissioner of state taxes for Kohima Ward B, the operation targeted various commercial establishments under the authority of Section 67 of the NGST Act, 2017.

During the operation, teams reviewed whether businesses were issuing mandatory tax invoices as required by Section 31 of the Act. Officers demanded production of purchase invoices, sales records, and stock registers to compare actual physical inventory against reported business accounts. Any observed discrepancies were documented for potential legal action, and investigators seized specific cash memos and bills for further scrutiny.

The State Taxes Department stated their goal is to ensure accountability while discouraging tax evasion. "The State Taxes Department reiterated its commitment to facilitating compliance while taking strict action against tax evasion and non compliance," the department noted in an official release. Authorities also reminded traders that failing to maintain accurate records under Section 35 of the NGST Act can lead to significant penalties.

Officials plan to expand these enforcement efforts to other areas of the city in the coming weeks. Consumers are also encouraged to play a role by requesting genuine tax invoices for every purchase. The department believes this public cooperation will improve overall tax collection and strengthen the state exchequer.
