Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi has urged the Centre and the Defence Ministry to launch a thorough investigation into a deadly Indian Air Force aircraft crash. The accident occurred on Saturday morning in Jorhat and resulted in the deaths of five military personnel.

The Russian-origin Antonov An-32 transport aircraft was on a routine sortie with six people on board when it crashed during a landing attempt at approximately 10 am. Preliminary reports indicate the plane, which had departed from Jorhat Air Force Station for a military base in Chabua, requested to return shortly after takeoff. It reportedly lost control upon landing, veered off the runway, split into two pieces, and caught fire.

Five personnel were killed in the crash, including Squadron Leader Prashant Singh, Flight Lieutenant Shubham Kumar, Sergeant Jitendra Sharma, Agniveervayu Khemaram Kumawat, and Agniveervayu Danish Alam. The co-pilot survived the incident and is receiving treatment at a military hospital in Jorhat.

Gogoi expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and called for accountability regarding the tragedy. In a statement on social media, he said, "I urge the government and the Defence Ministry to conduct a proper inquiry into the mishap and identify the primary cause so that measures are taken to prevent such accidents in the future."

The Indian Air Force has already initiated a Court of Inquiry to determine the specific circumstances that led to the accident.
