Guwahati: A violent blast ripped through the Kade Global Infrastructure LLP plant in Pangram, Cachar district, on Sunday morning. Four workers died instantly when the explosion tore through the facility at approximately 11:30 a.m. The dead were identified as Kiran Munda, Appu Baraik, Shyamal Gour, and Sagar Nath. Nath worked as a driver and hailed from Tripura, while the others were local residents.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene. Police, local authorities, and the National Disaster Response Force searched for survivors. The injured were transported to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, with some listed in critical condition. One additional worker was treated at Udharbond Hospital and is reportedly out of danger.
Authorities have detained four individuals, including the factory manager, for questioning. Owners of the firm must appear before investigators on Monday. Cabinet Minister Kaushik Rai confirmed multiple investigations are underway. "The inquiries will cover the functioning of the unit, labour safety measures and all circumstances connected with the tragedy," Rai stated.
Locals expressed fury over the disaster. Residents claim previous, smaller explosions went ignored by the factory management. Protesters blocked factory gates to demand better safety standards and financial support. Security forces eventually cleared the area. A magisterial probe, a police investigation, and a review by the District Labour Commissioner will determine if workplace safety norms were violated. A forensic team from Guwahati is expected to arrive to examine the blast site.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced an ex-gratia payment of 5 lakh rupees for each family of the deceased. The district administration is currently negotiating with management to secure further compensation. Police have sealed the site to preserve evidence while the investigation proceeds.
