Guwahati: Police arrested five people including Rakesh Kumar Surana, the owner of KADE Global Infrastructure LLP, following a lethal explosion at a rod manufacturing plant in Pangram. The blast hit the Udharband constituency around 11 am on Sunday. It killed four workers instantly. The victims are Appu Boraik, Kiron Munda, Shyamal Gaur, and Sagar Nath, who hailed from Agartala in Tripura.
Molten metal caused the blast. The sound carried across the area. Responders from the police and Fire and Emergency Services pulled survivors from the wreckage. While some required hospital care, others treated for minor injuries were discharged. Doctors at Silchar Medical College and Hospital declared the four men dead before post-mortem exams.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered an immediate investigation. A Forensic Science Laboratory team visited the site to gather evidence. Authorities have launched a magisterial inquiry and a separate Labour Department probe to check for safety violations. Officials confirmed they will take legal action against those responsible for negligence. Residents allege prior, unreported explosions occurred at the site. One relative claimed the management tried to downplay the tragedy. Police are reviewing these reports.
The Assam government granted Rs 5 lakh ex gratia to each victim's family. Udharband MLA Rajdeep Goala and Cachar Deputy Commissioner Rahul Kumar Gupta delivered the funds. They promised state support. Cachar officials said the investigation is underway and that "stringent legal action will be taken against those found responsible for negligence or violations of industrial safety norms."
