Guwahati: An oil tanker killed a seven-month pregnant woman on National Highway 37 Wednesday. Mary Lalrimpui Mar died instantly in the Jujang Pahar area of Cachar district. She was headed to a routine prenatal check-up near Fulertal on her scooter. She lived in Lower Laban Khal.

A speeding tanker, registration MN 01 AA 4180, smashed into her scooter from behind. The vehicle came from the Jiribam side. The driver did not stop. He fled the scene immediately after the crash. The impact threw Mar from her scooter and caused fatal injuries.

Local residents revolted. They blocked the Silchar-Imphal National Highway to demand a quick arrest. The crowd refused to let officials move the body for a post-mortem. Banskandi Police eventually arrived to manage the situation. Authorities detained the tanker and its driver. Protesters finally allowed the body to head to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for examination. Police said, "Police are investigating the circumstances leading to the accident and the alleged hit-and-run."
