Guwahati: Four workers died after an explosion rocked the Kade Global Infrastructure LLP rod manufacturing unit in Pangram on Sunday. The blast hit at 11:03 a.m. in the Udharbond constituency. Police confirmed the victims died on the spot.
The deceased were Appu Baraik, Kiran Munda, Shyamal Gour, and Sagar Nath. Local MLA Rajdeep Goala noted that three were local residents, while Nath worked as a driver and hailed from Tripura. A fifth worker sustained minor injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Udharbond Hospital.
Authorities acted fast. Police arrested five individuals including the factory owner, Rakesh Kumar Surana, and the facility manager.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for each family of the deceased. MLA Rajdeep Goala and Deputy Commissioner Rahul Kumar Gupta handed out the initial aid to the families. The district administration is also currently in talks with management regarding additional compensation.
Cabinet Minister Kaushik Rai, who visited the site with Deputy Commissioner Gupta and Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjib Saikia, confirmed several probes are now underway. This includes a magisterial inquiry, a police investigation, and a formal review by the District Labour Commissioner. A forensic team from Guwahati arrived to collect evidence.
Rai noted that investigators will look into local claims of previous, unreported explosions at the facility. "If such incidents had taken place and were not reported to the administration, that aspect will also be investigated. The inquiries will cover the functioning of the unit, labour safety measures and all circumstances connected with the tragedy," Rai said. Officials also directed the Assistant Labour Commissioner to inspect all safety facilities and statutory safeguards at the site.
