Agartala: Former members of the National Liberation Front of Tripura and the All Tripura Tiger Force have declared a 72-hour strike beginning June 12. The groups are protesting the failure of the central and state governments to implement a rehabilitation package agreed upon on September 4, 2024.
Leaders of the surrendered factions, including ATTF president Kalendra Debbarma and NLFT president Prasenjit Debbarma, claim that a designated 250-crore rupee fund for development and support has not been released. During a press conference in Agartala, the representatives stated, "rehabilitation demands of surrendered groups in the past had been addressed within a relatively short period," while alleging that their current case has been ignored despite repeated pleas to authorities.
The delayed implementation has caused significant economic hardship for former cadres, according to the leadership. They report that eight members have died due to a lack of proper healthcare and financial aid since the agreement was signed. The protesters intend to escalate their pressure by launching road and rail blockades in Khowai and Teliamura on the first day of the strike.
Local authorities are bracing for potential disruptions to public transport and movement across the state. The former militants warned that they are ready to intensify their agitation if the government fails to open a dialogue or show tangible progress on the promised commitments.
