Guwahati: Former Nagaon Deputy Commissioner Debasish Sharma jumped to the Bharatiya Janata Party on September 8. He walked into the fold alongside journalists Lenin Saurav Bora and Gunjan Kalita. The trio inked their commitment during a party event held under the watchful eyes of state president and MP Dilip Saikia. Cabinet Ministers Piyush Hazarika, Jayanta Malla Baruah, and Kaushik Rai stood by, alongside Nagaon MLA Rupak Sharma and other key party officials.
Saikia welcomed the former administrator, citing his deep ties to the local social and cultural scene. He praised the newcomer's record, noting that he had served the public well during his tenure. "His life is dedicated to the people of Assam," Saikia stated. He expects the new blood to provide the party with extra muscle during the upcoming contest.
The move arrives just days before the Nagaon bypoll. Talk has already turned to whether Sharma will land a spot on the ballot. Saikia noted that the former official made no demands for a ticket before signing on. The party currently relies on an existing panel of candidates to plan its next moves. However, the door remains cracked open for the newcomer. If the people of Nagaon push for it, or if Sharma asks, the state and national committees will look at his name. Leadership will decide his specific responsibilities at a later date as campaign activity in the region ramps up.
