Aizawl: Incessant rain has forced over 80 families to flee their homes in south Mizoram. The Khawthlangtuipui River surged, swallowing houses and local markets near the Bangladesh border. Tlabung town took a hard hit, with 42 families displaced by rising water. Another 40 families scrambled to safety in Tipperaghat village as floodwaters inundated their neighborhood.
Landslides and rockfalls are piling up across the state. Officials counted more than 29 trouble spots after a week of relentless storms. National Highway 54 is closed near Bualte village, trapping travelers for four days. This blockage effectively cut off the southern districts of Lawngtlai and Siaha from the rest of the state. Another major slide at Ngaizel choked the Aizawl-Thenzawl-Lunglei Highway.
Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister Lalnilawma visited the Ngaizel slide site on Thursday. He pledged that the government would provide aid to those who lost property. Lalnilawma warned people to stay sharp during the severe weather. "Appealing for greater public vigilance, the minister advised residents to immediately report landslides, floods or other emergencies to the authorities instead of taking unnecessary risks," he said. Officials report no deaths so far.
