Guwahati: Police arrested five people, including one juvenile, for the rape and murder of a 15-year-old student in Aloichhara village. The girl was a Class IX student. Her body was found at her home on August 1. The discovery ignited protests across the Hailakandi district and the Barak Valley.
A Special Investigation Team led by the Additional Superintendent of Police for Crime is handling the case. Officers began by detaining three suspects. They grabbed two more after uncovering fresh leads. A preliminary post-mortem report confirmed the girl was sexually assaulted before her death.
The four adult suspects now sit in police custody. A judge remanded them following their court appearance. Officials sent the juvenile to an observation home under the Juvenile Justice Act. Forensic teams swept the crime scene for evidence.
Investigators are looking at personal relationships and past disputes to find a motive. Some suspects knew the girl. Police officials said, "The investigation is still underway." Authorities have pledged a fair probe. Civil society groups and local residents are demanding a fast-track trial. Police maintain the work of analyzing forensic data and questioning the suspects continues.
