Kohima: The Rabindra Utsav 2026 opened on Sunday at the Durga Mandir auditorium in Dimapur. Organized by the Sargam Cultural Association in partnership with the North East Zone Cultural Centre, the event celebrates the cultural contributions of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
This year, 110 participants registered for competitions in Rabindra Sangeet, Rabindra Nrityam, and art. These events are split into three age-based categories, ranging from children as young as six to adults, and will conclude on June 14.
G.K. Rengma, president of the Naga Council Dimapur, served as the keynote speaker. He reflected on Tagore’s journey from a criticized writer to a global literary icon who eventually secured the Nobel Prize for Gitanjali. Rengma encouraged local students to adopt Tagore’s disciplined approach to learning and his commitment to social progress.
Highlighting Tagore’s vision for education, Rengma pointed to the founding of Visva-Bharati University as a model for a free, natural learning environment. He urged the Bengali community in Nagaland to use the festival to promote Tagore’s message of peace and harmony. The program also featured remarks from L.K. Peter Anal, Mahavir Jain, and K.K. Paul.
