Dimapur Businesses Struggle Amid Steep Sales Decline

Kohima: Dimapur is facing a severe economic slowdown as local traders report a sales decline exceeding 50 percent. A recent survey conducted between May 25 and May 30 across eight business sectors, including hardware, clothing, and food vendors, revealed a consistent pattern of reduced customer traffic and mounting financial strain.

Business owners identified rising fuel prices as a primary driver of the downturn. Increased transportation costs have inflated the prices of goods, making it difficult for vendors to turn a profit. Some traders reported days where they failed to cover basic operating expenses, leading to significant product waste for those selling perishable goods.

Supply chains have also been disrupted as many wholesale centers and godowns relocate to neighboring districts in Assam. This shift has diverted commercial activity away from the city. Traders dismissed weather patterns as a cause, noting that markets historically remained busy even during intense summer heat.

Financial pressure is further compounded by what business owners describe as multiple taxation. Beyond payments made to underground groups, merchants feel forced to provide donations to various civil society organizations. Many small retailers are now struggling to pay rent and are considering closing their doors permanently if conditions do not improve. Despite these challenges, traders noted that local customers still make up the majority of their base, discounting stricter Inner Line Permit checks as a primary reason for the drop in footfall.
