Imphal: The Central Reserve Police Force is using sports to bridge divides in Manipur. The SPANDAN initiative, short for Sports for Peace and Development Across the Nation, recently brought Kuki and Naga youth together in the conflict-riddled Kangpokpi district. Battalions organized these events in partnership with the Sports Authority of India at Yaikongpao, Motbung, and Makui.
The 112 Battalion hosted a kabaddi tournament at Yaikongpao involving eight local teams. Lower Thangamba took the top prize after beating Yaikongpao in the final. Mahika placed third. Winners walked away with cash prizes, medals, and certificates.
Nearby in Motbung, a 10-km cycling race drew crowds. Lamtinlal Singsit finished first with a time of 28 minutes and 10 seconds. Thanggoumang Haokip followed, and Lamginlen Vaiphei took third. Two veterans, Satngam Kipgen and Krishna Bahadur Karki, joined the younger riders on the road.
The 67 Battalion held a 10-km marathon at Makui village. Gospel Chawangtingduimai won the run in 36 minutes and 12 seconds. Chunchambou Wijunamai and Robert Nikhanamai rounded out the top finishers. Assistant Commandant Vikram oversaw the event and spoke about the impact on the local community.
"The role of sports in developing discipline, confidence, teamwork, leadership and a healthy outlook among young people," Vikram said during the gathering. These events provided a brief escape for locals living under the shadow of persistent violence. Organizers hope the games help restore normalcy and foster lasting peace between neighbors.
