Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma wants more private investment in Meghalaya. He claims it is the only way to reach a $10-billion economy. The state needs more jobs. Government hiring remains limited, so the private sector must step up.
Sangma identified hotels, industries, and services as key areas for growth. He argued that these sectors will spark economic activity and hire the local youth. Expansion is vital. Without new capital, the state faces a hiring wall.
Opposition to state projects remains a reality. Some residents worry about land use and environmental damage. Sangma addressed these fears on September 20. He promised that the government would not ignore local concerns while chasing new money. Safeguards will be in place. All projects must follow strict environmental rules and protect community interests.
"The government was not talking about simply handing over land for investment," Sangma said. He insisted that the state will provide logistical support while keeping the welfare of locals at the front of the queue.
Engagement is now the plan. The government will clarify its agenda through public discussions to win community support. Challenges will persist, but the goal stays the same. Sangma says they will not abandon the economic roadmap. They have to keep pushing to give young people a future.
