Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the foundation stone for the Indian Space Research Organisation’s Advanced Radar Research Centre will be laid today in Chandrapur. This facility is a strategic piece of the Project NETRA program. It tracks space objects to keep national assets safe.
ISRO secured 67 acres of land for this project. They completed the land transfer in November 2023 and finalized the registration on November 7, 2025. This move aims to bolster India’s space situational awareness as orbital traffic grows.
The project includes a radar system, an optical telescope, and a control center. These parts work together to monitor satellites, determine orbits, issue collision alerts, and track rocket-body re-entries. This work builds on the Bengaluru SSA Control Centre opened in 2020.
Sarma praised the selection of his state for this work. He noted that the facility signifies Assam’s rising status in national technology. “Today, we will lay the foundation stone of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)’s Advanced Radar Research Centre at Chandrapur, Assam,” Sarma stated. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for backing the development.
