Itanagar: The Congress party zeroed in on Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week. They want Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu out of office. A CBI probe is currently looking into government contracts worth 1,270 crore rupees. These contracts went to Khandu’s family members between 2015 and 2025 while he served as the state's PWD minister.
Jairam Ramesh, a general secretary for Congress, went on X to call out the PM. He pointed to a Supreme Court order from April 6 that mandated the CBI inquiry. The government remains silent. Ramesh argued that Khandu should have stepped down immediately after the court ruling. Instead, the Chief Minister still holds the PWD portfolio and allegedly blocks investigators from accessing key files.
Legal tension is rising. The CBI complained to the Supreme Court about a lack of cooperation from the state. This prompted the court to summon top Arunachal officials on August 3. During an August 24 hearing, the court noted that the state dumped huge chunks of useless documents on the agency instead of handing over necessary evidence. Ramesh slammed the BJP leadership for this continued obstruction.
Ramesh attacked the Prime Minister’s old slogan about ending corruption. He twisted the words to describe the current state of affairs. "It is extraordinary and totally unacceptable that the CM continues in office. This shows the complete hypocrisy of the PM," Ramesh said. He claimed the situation proves that the party has moved from a stance of stopping corruption to one where they participate in it.
The Supreme Court will review this matter again on September 25. These claims regarding the PWD contracts and government conduct remain part of an ongoing legal proceeding. No final judicial findings have been issued yet.
