Guwahati: Assam police tracked down a fraudster. The Criminal Investigation Department arrested Md. Anuwar Hussain on July 24 in Garukhuti, Morigaon district. Hussain, who hails from Lalipathar village in Nagaon, stands accused of running a recruitment scam targeting Assam Rifles aspirants.
The trouble started on July 14, 2026. Montu Thengal, a 25-year-old from Lakhimpur, filed an FIR at the CID Police Station alongside several other victims. The group had initially failed the official Assam Rifles recruitment process in Shillong on July 20, 2025. Following their rejection, they met Hussain.
Hussain played the part well. He introduced himself as a "Major of Assam Rifles" and promised to use his influence to secure appointments on compassionate grounds. He demanded payments ranging from Rs 3.5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh per candidate. He signed written agreements to build trust and took the cash through bank transfers, Google Pay, and hand-delivered bundles.
The jobs never materialized. Hussain kept the money and vanished. CID officials plan to bring him before a court to request police custody. Investigators suspect he scammed a long list of youths and are hunting for potential accomplices in the racket.
