Agartala: National Commission for Women Chairperson Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar announced a federal plan to stop child marriages by 2030. The government seeks a 10 percent drop in reported cases by 2026. Rahatkar shared this goal during a visit to Tripura. She led workshops on human trafficking, cyber stalking, and workplace safety.
Tripura will soon beef up its legal defenses. The state will set up internal and local committees under the POSH Act within four months. Rahatkar pushed for better enforcement of these rules. "The POSH Act has to be implemented across the country. We are organising a workshop in the state for the effective implementation of the Act and the formation of internal and local committees as provided under the Act," she said.
The NCW chief held high-level talks with Chief Minister Manik Saha. They discussed policy shifts to help women. She also reviewed welfare programs with the Chief Secretary and state officials. This included vetting the performance of Self Help Groups and Village Organizations. She met with Lakhpati Didis and toured an all-women Panchayat Samiti in Gomati district.
Trafficking remains a major threat. Border security forces joined the NCW for an anti-trafficking workshop. Rahatkar noted that criminals often use marriage as a cover for sexual exploitation. Meanwhile, cyber stalking is rising. She warned that offenders are shifting from physical threats to online harassment. She urged women in Tripura to report abuse. The state police received instructions to process the few complaints on file with more urgency.
