Guwahati: Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain blasted a Glasgow restaurant for printing paper napkins with a map of India that erased the Northeast region. The incident occurred at Mister Singh's India, The Home of Curry, after the Indian boxing team wrapped up their run at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The map also excluded the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The boxer did not stay silent.
"The map on the napkins is missing our Northeast. Every part of India is important and should be represented," Lovlina said. The Boxing Federation of India demanded the restaurant pull the napkins immediately. Officials labeled the inaccurate print unacceptable, especially during an international event. Many of the Indian boxers on the roster hail from the Northeast, making the error particularly sensitive.
This friction follows a historic performance by the Indian boxing squad in Glasgow. They hauled in 10 medals, including seven gold and three silver, marking the country's best-ever Commonwealth Games campaign. Lovlina herself earned a silver medal in the women's 75kg event after a tight 4-1 split decision loss to Australia's Emma Sue Greentree on Saturday.
Assam Cabinet Minister Atul Bora praised the 28-year-old on August 2, calling her an inspiration for state youth. The veteran fighter, who serves as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in Assam, moved into the final after a 5-0 semi-final win over Tuvalu's Tarona Taafaki. She previously missed the podium in 2018 and 2022, but her current silver adds to a legacy that includes an Olympic bronze and a 2025 gold in Hyderabad.
