Guwahati: Barama Police detained Ajay Baishya in the Baksa district of Assam after he allegedly impersonated a forest official to shake down a truck driver. The suspect intercepted a sand-laden dumper on National Highway 27 at night. He is a resident of Mushalpur.

Baishya pulled over the vehicle traveling from Barpeta Road toward Nalbari. He claimed he needed to check the challan. He grabbed the driver's mobile phone and threatened him for cash. Officers seized the black Scorpio Baishya used to pull off the scheme.

Police are now questioning him. They want to know if he worked alone or if others were involved. The driver confirmed the incident to authorities. Preliminary reports suggest Baishya operated on the highway for some time, posing as an official to squeeze drivers. "He is also alleged to be involved in illegal sand and stone mining and transportation activities in Baksa district," officials noted.

This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding the illicit sand and stone trade. Operators often pose as staff at night to intercept cargo and demand bribes. These activities continue despite direct orders from the state Forest Minister. Police intend to determine if anyone within the Baksa Forest Department provided support to the suspect.
