Guwahati: The Assam State Transport Corporation is installing an Intelligent Transport Management System across its entire bus fleet. The state government confirmed the move on Tuesday to overhaul public transit operations through digital integration. Buses will now feature GPS tracking, e-payment options, and automated ticketing.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma pushed the upgrade. He claims the project makes ASTC buses "not just smarter, but incredibly safer." The tech connects vehicles directly to state monitoring networks to allow precise location tracking for both authorities and commuters.

Safety remains the core focus of this rollout. Each bus will carry live CCTV cameras and emergency SOS buttons linked to control centers. Officials hope these features provide a secure environment, specifically for women travelers. Sarma noted, "With ITMS, ASTC buses can now be tracked in real time, bringing technology right into the everyday journey of our people. From smarter operations to stronger safety systems, this is a new chapter for public transport in Assam."

The system also manages scheduling to help passengers plan their trips with better accuracy. This project aims to modernize the state's transport infrastructure by blending fleet management with high-tech passenger information tools.
