Assam Sets 2027 Deadline for Full Paperless Governance

Guwahati: Assam will dump paper for digital workflows across all government offices by January 1, 2027. This move marks a major shift in state operations. The Chief Minister's Office announced the target date on Wednesday, September 23, framing it as a push for faster administration.

"Save the Date: 1 January 2027. A new chapter in Assam's digital governance," the office posted on X. The state government claims the switch will make public services more transparent, efficient, and citizen-centric under the leadership of Dr. Himanta Biswa.

The system uses the National Informatics Centre platform. All 58 departments in the Assam Secretariat already run on this software. Authorities are currently rolling out the tech to directorates and Deputy Commissioner offices. The setup replaces physical files with electronic workflows. Officials will now receive, track, sign, and archive documents entirely online.

Assam began this digital shift years ago. Officials set up a state-level steering mechanism in 2021. The government also started the e-Office District project in 2026 to push digital tools into local government machinery. Assam follows in the footsteps of Karnataka, which started using these systems in 2009. Kerala, Haryana, and Maharashtra have also adopted similar electronic file management systems.
