Guwahati: The Sadou Asam Karmachari Parishad (SAKP) is pushing the Assam government to finally adopt the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). They want this for state workers whose hiring processes started before January 2005. The Finance Department already gathered the necessary data, yet the switch stalled. Time is running out for these veterans.

SAKP President Kumud Kumar Kataki and Secretary General Pranabjyoti Bhuyan sent a formal memorandum to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. They want the state to verify the collected data and issue final orders immediately. The demand relies on a central government memorandum from February 17, 2020, and a state finance communication from March 28, 2025.

Leadership claims these workers deserve certainty after decades of service. The union is also cleaning house. During a November 1, 2026, meeting, the Central Executive Body set a three-month deadline for litigants to drop all pending legal battles against the organization. Spokesperson Sailendra Pandey stated that the group is focused on internal order. If the cases remain active after the three-month window, the union will pursue them to the end. As the leaders noted, the group is "committed to protecting government employees' interests while ensuring accountability within its own ranks."
