Shillong: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed a 150 crore flood mitigation project for Jorabat this Wednesday. The initiative aims to stop the constant flash floods choking the state gateway. It will integrate directly into the upcoming Guwahati Ring Road project.
Recent floods brought traffic to a complete halt, forcing the government to ditch temporary fixes for permanent engineering. "The initiative is intended to provide a permanent solution to the recurring flash floods that disrupt normal life in the strategically important gateway to the state."
Consultants are currently drafting the technical plans for the work. They must get approval from IIT Guwahati before moving forward. This ensures the design stands up to reality.
Jorabat sits on the Assam-Meghalaya border and suffers from extreme congestion. To fix this, Sarma proposed turning the Digaru-Narangi road into a four-lane highway. This path gives drivers from Jagiroad an alternative route into Guwahati. The CM asked legislators from Dimoria and Dispur to help speed up land acquisition. These efforts are part of a wider plan to fix drainage and transport throughout the Guwahati metro region.
