Assam Flood Crisis Forces Cremation on Tiny Dry Patch as Solar Power Aids Recovery

Guwahati: Devastating floodwaters in Assam have forced a grieving family to cremate 106-year-old Aitikou Tamuli on a tiny patch of dry land. The Alengmora area near Jorhat town remains largely submerged after the Bhogdoi River overflowed its banks. Knee-deep water flooded courtyards and entered homes, leaving the family without space for final rites. Residents eventually found a small, dry spot beneath a tree beside a local pond to complete the ceremony.

The region remains in a state of chaos. Disrupted connectivity and power outages continue to plague communities across Upper Assam. Thousands of people face damaged homes and blocked roads as they try to recover.

Sivasagar-based innovator Abhijeet Dowarah is fighting back against the darkness. He deployed portable solar-powered mobile charging stations across 10 flood-affected villages. These free units allow residents to call relatives and access emergency services while the electrical grid remains down. The stations have provided much-needed relief to locals cut off from information.

Dowarah designed the equipment to offer help during the recovery phase. The innovator explained that the move was intended to provide practical assistance to communities, stating, "the initiative was intended to provide practical assistance to communities struggling in the aftermath of the floods." For many, these small solar units offer a lifeline as the water finally begins to recede.
