Guwahati: Rupkamal Kalita took the stand Saturday, October 3. He faced a fast-track court to detail the death of singer Zubeen Garg. The artist died on September 19, 2025, while swimming during a yacht trip in Singapore. Kalita, an Assamese expatriate based in Singapore and a member of the Assam Association Singapore, was on that boat.
The court must piece together what happened. Kalita previously sat for questioning with the Assam Police Special Investigation Team and the CID. He is the brother-in-law of Amritprabha Mahanta. Mahanta remains a name of interest regarding the singer's final hours.
The trial relies on these accounts. Investigators are building a timeline through witness statements and physical evidence. The court continues to call individuals who were on the yacht that day. Officials state, "The sequence of events and the circumstances surrounding Garg's death will ultimately be assessed on the basis of the evidence and testimonies presented during the proceedings." The judge will weigh every detail to reach a final verdict.
