Guwahati: Education authorities in Bongaigaon, Assam, have mandated strict weight limits for school bags across all government, provincialised, and private schools. This directive follows official instructions from the state Elementary Education Department to ensure student well-being and reduce physical burden.

District Elementary Education Officer and Inspector of Schools Pallavi Medhi issued the order, which requires immediate compliance from all head teachers and principals. The regulation mandates specific weight caps based on grade levels: 1.5 kg for Classes I and II, 2 to 3 kg for Classes III and IV, 4 kg for Classes VI and VII, 4.5 kg for Classes VIII and IX, and 5 kg for Class X students.

The notification warns that "action may be taken against institutions found violating the government guidelines." Officials stated that this initiative is designed to protect students from the health risks associated with carrying excessively heavy loads during their daily commute to school.
