Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has greenlit the creation of the Guwahati Satellite Cities Development Authority. This new body will oversee the planning and expansion of satellite towns around Guwahati to ease urban pressure caused by the city's rapidly growing population and infrastructure demands.

The authority aims to foster balanced regional development by directing growth away from the city core and into new urban hubs. This initiative focuses on expanding housing and essential services while ensuring future expansion follows a structured plan.

In a separate policy shift, the Cabinet updated rules regarding the deputation of senior government staff. Officers from the All India Services, including those in the IAS, must now secure Cabinet approval before receiving a No Objection Certificate for Central or inter-state deputation. Officials stated the move is aimed at "introducing greater oversight in decisions relating to the movement of senior officials" and is expected to influence administrative operations across all state departments.
