Guwahati: Assam BJP leaders pushed 16 crore worth of relief supplies toward Upper Assam on July 29. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the aid shipment from the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati. The goods, bought through voluntary donations from party workers, target victims across Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Golaghat. Trucks carried 1.8 lakh mekhela chadors, 1.8 lakh children T-shirts, and 1.5 lakh mosquito nets. Heavy Nagaland rains on July 19 sparked the chaos. Roughly 11 lakh people across 2,101 villages face ruin.
Sarma noted the massive displacement caused by the deluge. He confirmed that families of the deceased will receive 9 lakh in total compensation. This includes 4 lakh ex gratia and 5 lakh from his relief fund. The same payout applies to families of the missing if they stay gone for one month. Orunodoi payments move up to August 1, bringing 2,500 to beneficiary households. Students get extra cash too. High schoolers take 1,000, undergrads grab 3,000, and postgrads get 5,000. Free uniforms and books follow. The state will reissue lost academic papers for zero cost.
Sarma plans to hold a meeting with bank heads to discuss debt relief for the region. He stated, "The floods in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat had pushed thousands of families into severe hardship and created uncertainty about their immediate future."
Meanwhile, the Sivasagar district administration wants more time. Inspector of Schools Samiran Bora requested a 10-day summer break extension. Roughly 500 schools currently sit damaged. More than 70,000 students wait in limbo. The request pushes the reopening date to August 10. Schools currently dry and safe will start on August 1 as planned. State BJP president Dilip Saikia asked volunteers to keep working until things stabilize.
