Assam Anganwadi Centre Operates Out of Residential Garage for Decades

Guwahati: Forty children in Assam are getting their education inside a residential garage. Anganwadi Centre No. 21 West Fotaljar serves the Garajan area of the Juria region in the Nagaon district. It lacks a permanent government building. The makeshift classroom has operated out of the home of an Anganwadi helper for nearly 30 years.

The setup is failing the kids. It lacks toilets, safe drinking water, and proper seating arrangements. Local residents claim the centre stays closed frequently. Members of the Garajan youth community have called out the lack of infrastructure. They are also reporting suspicious activity involving state resources. The group has alleged widespread irregularities in the use of funds and food supplies intended for the children.

These claims remain unverified for now. Still, the community is fed up. The Garajan youth community has demanded a high-level inquiry into the matter and action against anyone found responsible. Residents state, "The centre has been functioning from the helper's home garage for nearly 30 years, instead of having a dedicated government building." Officials have yet to address the missing facilities or the long-term absence of a proper facility.
