Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced that organ transplant services are coming to the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences. Crews are already installing an Organ Perfusion System at the facility. Kidney transplants will launch the program.
Khandu confirmed a partnership with Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi to build out the necessary infrastructure. The state also rolled out the Chief Minister's Organ Transplant Scheme to help residents pay for expensive surgeries. The program provides up to Rs 12 lakh for kidney transplants, Rs 17 lakh for bone marrow, and Rs 22 lakh for liver transplants.
The announcement followed a ceremony where the state hired 72 new medical specialists. These doctors passed the Medical Specialist Recruitment Examination held earlier this year. Out of 117 applicants, officials interviewed 116 candidates before selecting the final group. "Our vision is simple and clear: our people should not have to leave Arunachal Pradesh for treatment that can be provided here," Khandu said.
Despite the recent hiring surge, the state still faces staffing gaps. Roughly 35 specialist roles remain empty at TRIHMS, alongside 61 positions in government hospitals and 79 General Duty Medical Officer slots. Plans are moving forward to build new medical colleges in Namsai and West Kameng to bolster the system. TRIHMS also raised its MBBS intake to 100 seats and increased APST reservation quotas to 85 per cent.
Arunachal Pradesh currently runs six zonal hospitals, 17 district hospitals, 57 community health centres, 162 primary health centres, and 647 sub-health centres. These updates fall under the state goal of Viksit Arunachal by 2047, aligning with federal development plans.
