Guwahati: Assam Jatiya Parishad president Lurinjyoti Gogoi ripped into the Central Government on Wednesday, August 5, for its sluggish response to the catastrophic flooding in Upper Assam. Speaking in Dibrugarh, Gogoi blasted the administration for waiting 20 days to send a Union Minister to the site. He questioned why the Prime Minister attends cultural events in the state but vanishes during natural disasters.
Gogoi claims the current financial aid is a joke. The government offered flood-affected families only 15,000 rupees. He argued this cash is useless for people who lost their entire homes and belongings. The party pointed out that the current compensation follows the outdated 2015 flood relief manual. "The guidelines have become outdated due to the sharp rise in the prices of essential commodities over the past decade," Gogoi said.
The criticism didn't stop at the Prime Minister. Gogoi called out the Union Home Minister for failing to deliver on past promises to make the state flood-free. He also highlighted a major funding gap: the Centre handed out 500 crore rupees each to Odisha and Maharashtra despite lack of flood conditions, while giving Assam only 300 crore rupees. He labeled this a discriminatory move.
The AJP president tied the destruction to state-sanctioned greed. He blamed the severe flooding on rampant stone and coal mining plus widespread tree felling. He accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of shielding these industries, claiming hill-cutting operations worsened the devastation. The AJP now demands a Cabinet meeting to revise relief norms and wants the government to explain exactly why these floods keep hitting the region so hard.
