Assam Congress Leader Hits Out Over Failed Flood Loan Relief

Guwahati: Former Assam MLA Debabrata Saikia is calling out the state government for failing to enforce its own flood relief promises. The government previously pledged a six-month suspension on loan EMIs for citizens devastated by recent floods. That relief is not reaching the people. Saikia claims banks are still pulling payments from empty accounts.

Borrowers are now getting hit with bounce charges and penalties instead of receiving the promised financial break. Many of these families lost homes, livestock, and crops to the rising waters. They have no money left to pay, let alone extra fees. Saikia slammed the current situation as a total contradiction to official assurances.

He challenged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to explain why the moratorium is not working on the ground. "Despite the government's assurance, banks and financial institutions are still trying to deduct EMIs from people's accounts," Saikia stated. He demanded the administration stop the harassment immediately. The state government has yet to issue a formal response to these charges.
