Guwahati: The Asom Gana Parishad is gearing up for the Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council elections. They held a late-night strategy session this Thursday, September 10, in the 16th Khowang Council Constituency at Nahoroni. Official dates remain pending. The party is already deep into organizational work across all council districts.
Former Chabua MLA Ponakon Barua led the meeting alongside central representative Putul Sonowal and central general secretary Sunil Rajkonwar. Harishwar Changmai, who serves as vice-president of the Kisan Parishad farmers' wing, also attended. These leaders discussed campaign tactics and the potential run of Jon Saikia for the Khowang seat.
Saikia feels good about his odds. "I expected strong public support for the party," Saikia said. The AGP has kept other district and central office-bearers active in the field throughout the region. If no coalition deal emerges, the party intends to run candidates for all 32 council seats on their own.
