Agartala: Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala is advancing its goal of achieving carbon-neutral operations through expanded renewable energy use and sustainable upgrades. Airport Director K.M. Nehra confirmed that the facility has transitioned away from coal and diesel power sources, running entirely on renewable energy since the beginning of 2025.
Current solar infrastructure includes a 250-kilowatt rooftop plant from 2019 and a new 60-kilowatt installation. Looking ahead, the airport plans to commission a 1,600-kilowatt ground-mounted project by 2027. This initiative is projected to generate 21 lakh units of electricity annually, potentially cutting electricity costs by nearly Rs 2 crore.
Growth at the airport has been substantial over the last decade. Passenger volume climbed from eight lakh in 2014 to nearly 15 lakh in the 2025-26 fiscal year, while cargo handling capacity tripled to 6,000 metric tons. The integrated terminal, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022, is designed to support 30 lakh passengers annually.
Nehra emphasized that the airport is focusing on both environmental goals and the traveler experience. He noted that the airport has introduced several passenger-friendly services, including "Digi Yatra for contactless travel, free Wi-Fi, self-check-in kiosks, childcare facilities, prayer rooms, sanitary napkin vending machines and EV charging stations."
Operational capabilities have also expanded to include 24-hour flight support and night landing facilities. Direct flight connections now reach major cities including Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai, a significant increase from the limited routes available in 2014. To mark Yatri Suvidha Diwas on June 15, the airport will host community events, including a blood donation camp and health screenings for workers.
