Adventurer Shekhar Bordoloi Launches Solo Brahmaputra Bamboo Raft Trip

Guwahati: Adventurer Shekhar Bordoloi pushed off on a solo bamboo raft expedition down the Brahmaputra River on November 1. He started at Zero Point under the Dhola-Sadiya Bridge near Saikhowa Ghat. He plans to hit the India-Bangladesh border by the time he finishes in Dhubri in about 22 days. This is a big trip.

Bordoloi, a mountaineer and Trekmonk athlete, aims to map out new river tourism corridors. He wants to prove that responsible travel provides steady money for people living along the banks. He previously led group raft trips on the same river in 2015, 2020, and 2024, but this is his first time going at it alone.

His planned route stops at several major ghats including Dibrugarh, Nimati Ghat, Silghat, and Guwahati. Bordoloi carries a massive resume as an expedition leader, having summited multiple Himalayan peaks over 6,000 metres and reached 8,350 metres on Mount Kanchenjunga. He believes the river holds massive, ignored potential.

Bordoloi stated, "The expedition was intended to highlight the untapped potential of the river and bring attention to communities along its banks." He believes developing local river tourism creates real income for villagers. The project officially kicked off with a flag-off ceremony at Zero Point on October 31.
