Guwahati: Four young men drowned in the Brahmaputra River on September 19. The tragedy hit the Balijan area under the Chabua co-district of Assam's Dibrugarh district. It happened around 5 pm. The victims were Satyajit Ghosh, Abhijit Deb, Surajit Dey, and Babu Ghosh. All four men lived in the Chabua area.
They entered the water to bathe. Strong currents swept them away quickly. The river claimed them. Search and rescue teams scrambled to locate the bodies immediately following the accident. Official reports on the recovery status remain pending.
Local residents noted that the men traveled to the Balijan site because shops closed to mark the first death anniversary of Assamese musician Zubeen Garg. Tribute programs occurred across the state for the late singer. One resident stated, "The youths had gone to the Balijan area after shops in the locality remained closed in observance of the first death anniversary of Assamese singer and musician Zubeen Garg."
