Aizawl: The Zoram People's Movement reached a major political milestone on June 18 by winning its first Rajya Sabha seat. Party candidate K. Laltluangkima secured victory for the lone Upper House seat representing Mizoram, defeating the Mizo National Front candidate, Zothansangi Hmar.
Laltluangkima received 26 votes during the poll held at the Mizoram Legislative Assembly. Hmar secured the remaining 10 votes from her party's legislators. While the assembly holds 40 seats, only 36 votes were cast as two BJP MLAs and one Congress MLA chose to abstain from the process.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma previously dismissed concerns regarding internal party disputes, asserting that his legislators remained cohesive. The election results aligned with the current strength of the parties, showing no signs of cross-voting. Regarding the unity of his party, Chief Minister Lalduhoma maintained that all ZPM legislators remained united during the voting process.
This victory bolsters the ZPM's influence on the national stage. Observers expect Laltluangkima to focus on critical issues for the region, including tribal welfare, border security, and economic infrastructure. By claiming this seat, the ruling party has successfully extended its local legislative majority into direct representation in Parliament.
