Aizawl: Fire claimed a life in Khawzawl district on Tuesday. A 21-year-old woman, Lalhriatzuali, died inside her family home at Khawhai village. The blaze erupted around 1 pm. She was the only person home at the time.

Witnesses at a nearby sub-centre spotted the smoke and ran to fight the flames. They controlled the fire before it destroyed the entire structure. Lalhriatzuali was on a bed when the fire started. She could not escape. Officials are still investigating the cause of the disaster.

The home belonged to Ngurkhuma, who lived there with three other family members. Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced Rs 4 lakh in ex-gratia assistance via the State Disaster Response Force. He pledged further aid if guidelines allow.

In a social media statement, Lalduhoma said: "It is very unfortunate that Ngurkhuma's house at Khawhai in Khawzawl district caught fire around noon today, and I have learnt that his daughter Lalhriatzuali, a person with a disability, lost her precious life. I am deeply saddened and extend my heartfelt condolences."
