Aizawl: Mizoram is positioning itself as a top-tier silk producer. Chief Minister Lalduhoma led a review of the Sericulture Department on Monday at the Aizawl conference hall to outline the expansion strategy. He aims to make the industry a primary driver for the state vision of Viksit Mizoram 2047. Thousands of farmers already work the land.
The state currently supports 7,040 sericulture farmers. They produced 53.826 metric tonnes of cocoons through September. The government recently bumped the procurement price from Rs 300 to Rs 350 per kg to support these growers. The administration also plans to acquire refrigerators for better cocoon storage. Lalduhoma told the department to submit a formal request to the Planning Department for the gear.
Manpower remains a major hurdle. The Chief Minister ordered changes to recruitment rules to fast-track hiring for essential roles, including silkworm rearers. He pushed district officers to speak up about local roadblocks. "Urged district-level officers to openly raise their requirements and challenges, assuring them that the issues would be discussed collectively to improve the effectiveness of sericulture-related programmes."
Several projects are active across the state. The Eri Cocoon and Yarn Production Cluster Development assists 120 farmers in Aizawl, Lunglei, and Saitual. The Integrated Muga Sericulture Development supports 70 households in Aizawl and Saitual, while the Comprehensive Mulberry Value Chain Enhancement Project serves 60 farmers. Under the Handholding initiative, 59 people received special packages and 10 secured loans. Success is spreading. Hrangngaihkimi of Tawipui North-II earned the CM Award 2026. Lalchhandami of Tuipui D also won a Best Achiever Award from the Central Silk Board on September 20.
