Aizawl: Mizoram kicked off a regional supply chain for muga silk. Sericulture Director Lalrinawma flagged off a shipment of 27,000 silkworms on September 30. The insects are heading to Narayanpur, Assam, and Rompara, Meghalaya, for further multiplication. It is a big move for the state.

Mizoram offers a cooler climate than the plains. High summer temperatures make rearing difficult in lower elevations. Officials say Mizoram provides the perfect environment for these silkworms during the hot season. The state is now capitalizing on its natural weather advantages.

The Central Silk Board maintains 14 seed production units throughout the Northeast. Mizoram opened its first P3 Muga unit this year in Thenzawl, Serchhip district. This facility launched thanks to direct efforts by Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Sericulture Minister Lalthansanga. The farm already reported successful rearing cycles as of August.

High demand for seeds in the plains drives the project. The Central Silk Board office in Mizoram is now producing local seeds to meet those needs. Officials expect this to boost local rearers and strengthen the region's overall output. One official stated, "The seed will be used for further multiplication in the two locations, officials said."
