Agartala: Tension boiled over in Beltali on Sunday. Angry crowds shut down local roads after vandals smashed a Hanuman idol and attacked a Shani temple in the Charpara Sachindralal area. Members of the Sanatani community led the charge, backed by the Dukli unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad.
Protesters demanded the immediate restoration of the idol. They also called for the resignation of Charpara Sachindralal Panchayat chief Biplab Majumder. The group held him responsible for the failure to protect religious sites in the region. Police officials rushed to the scene to restore order. The SDPO of Amtali and the OC of AD Nagar met with the demonstrators to negotiate a end to the blockade. The protesters eventually cleared the road.
Authorities are keeping a close watch on the neighborhood to stop further chaos. Investigations into the vandalism remain ongoing. Officials promised a full review of the situation. As one official noted, "the matter will be thoroughly examined."
