Guwahati: The University Grants Commission has granted autonomous status to Dispur College and Pragjyotish College in Guwahati. The move gives both schools a decade of academic independence. The status runs from the 2026-27 session through 2035-36.
UGC officials confirmed the decision on July 24 following a July 6 meeting. The commission acted on recommendations from its Standing Committee on Autonomous Colleges. The approval follows the 2023 UGC regulations governing standards for independent institutions.
Gauhati University must now issue formal notifications within 30 days. The university will oversee compliance for both colleges. These schools remain affiliated with Gauhati University. They gain the power to create their own curricula and run their own exams. They can also bring in new courses and modern teaching methods.
Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu celebrated the news for Dispur College. He posted about the update on X. Pegu said, "This is a significant milestone for one of Assam's prominent higher educational institutions."
The UGC sent the formal notice to the Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor of Assam, who acts as the Chancellor of Gauhati University. Both colleges must apply for an extension at least three months before their tenure expires in 2036. They must also follow all specific rules listed on the UGC website.
