Guwahati: Education officials suspended Abdul Manjan, the headmaster of Bhangnamari High School in Assam, on September 30. Chirang District Inspector of Schools B Boishnab issued the order after an inquiry committee found the school failed to keep confidential documents secure. The inquiry concluded the incident happened due to the "unsafe custody" of the papers.

Thieves broke into the school on the night of September 27. They forced open an almirah and snatched bundles containing Class 10 half-yearly exam papers. Reports indicate that the General Mathematics, General Science, and Hindi question papers were found torn. Manjan failed to report the theft promptly. He also neglected to notify the Inspector of Schools and the Secretary of the Chirang Examination Committee in time.

The suspension followed a show-cause notice served on September 26. Officials reviewed Manjan's response before finalizing the order. The ruling cites gross negligence and dereliction of duty. It does not implicate the headmaster in the actual theft or the leak.

Student groups including AASU, ABSU, ABMSU, Youth BPF, and BSU demanded immediate action. The Chirang District ABSU threatened to boycott rescheduled exams unless the incident was probed thoroughly. Manjan must now hand over his duties to the senior-most teacher. He cannot leave his headquarters without permission. He will receive half his pay pending approval from the Director of Education in Kokrajhar.
