Shillong: Two weather experts from the Shillong Meteorological Centre are heading south. Partik Kumar and Dheeraj Chaudhary will join the 46th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica. The India Meteorological Department confirmed the mission on October 28. These scientists will collect data to track climate shifts and global weather behavior.

Shillong held a farewell for the pair on Tuesday. Thangjalal Lhouvum, who leads the local meteorological office, spoke at the event. He noted the mission helps researchers map out complex atmospheric shifts. "The observations gathered during the expedition are expected to contribute to scientific research on climate variability and atmospheric processes," Lhouvum stated.

The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research manages the operation. It functions under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. This agency acts as the lead for the national Antarctic program. The team will now prepare for the long journey to the ice.
