Shillong: Vivanstone G. Kharngapkynta is staying in the race. The United Democratic Party candidate officially rejected claims on Wednesday that he planned to withdraw from the Shillong Lok Sabha by-election. He dismissed the chatter as a product of rumor-mongers trying to stir up fear.
His campaign continues despite internal party friction. Several UDP legislators are currently weighing their options, including a potential jump to the BJP, after consulting with grassroots workers. Kharngapkynta remains unfazed. He maintains the full support of the party leadership, the women and youth wings, and every sitting UDP MLA and MDC who gathered to endorse him on May 28.
The candidate is keeping his head down. He believes his political platform remains solid. "Rumours are rumours only, spread by rumour-mongers to create fear and instability in the minds of the public," Kharngapkynta said. He intends to focus his energy on the voters.
He expects the public to support him for the remaining 24 months of the term. Kharngapkynta claims his campaign relies on accountability and transparency. He says the party is simply an entity of people who come and go, but he trusts the voters of the Shillong Parliamentary constituency to make the right choice.
