Agartala: A group representing surrendered militants in Tripura has called off a planned rail and road blockade. The Tripura Guerrilla Returnees' Demand Committee decided to cancel the June 5 protest following successful negotiations with state officials regarding their rehabilitation and long-term livelihood concerns.

The agreement came after a meeting led by Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma. Director of the Tribal Welfare Department Subhasish Das confirmed the outcome, noting that the government promised to address the group's five-point charter of demands. "After the discussions, the TGRDC agreed to withdraw the rail-road blockade scheduled for June 5," Das said.

The discussion focused largely on the Chief Minister's Rubber Mission, an initiative designed to provide sustainable income for former militants. Although the project was expanded from 30,000 to 69,000 hectares, current funding has failed to keep pace with the scale of the program. Officials are now working with the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development to secure additional financial support for the initiative.

This cancellation ensures that transportation services will remain uninterrupted during the upcoming visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Agartala. Both parties plan to meet again on June 9 to finalize a strategy for the long-term integration and support of the surrendered militants.
